Artist, philanthropist, and entrepreneur Fer Caggiano joins Eric Cox and Leslie Haywood for this episode of #beyondthebusiness!
Fer Caggiano is a Brazilian-born painter known for her colorful, textured impasto landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. Fer studied at New York's Art Students League, where she began receiving recognition and awards for her work. After three years, she moved to London and immersed herself in the studio, developing as an artist independently. Though she was exhibiting in well-known galleries, Fer felt there had to be more to life than fame, so she left London to serve as a resident artist at a Buddhist temple. Her four-year spiritual journey reminded her of her early desires to protect the world. She redirected her artistic life toward bringing joy and shining a light on matters that deserve attention. Fer's work has been exhibited and collected around the world.

This second episode with guest Nancy Mace picks up with her early professional ventures.  Nancy found success in commercial real estate and developed a deep interest for politics. She then shares her perspective on the current state of the lowcountry.  Nancy Mace wants to see good people do good things and is overall optimistic feeling towards the future of South Carolina. 

Candidate for congress, guest Nancy Mace joins Eric and Leslie for this episode of Beyond the Business! In this first part Nancy shares her upbringing and foundational life experiences. Her early exposure to the value of community connectivity stuck with her into adulthood. She expands on how one pivotal traumatic moment can change someone's entire life trajectory but that there is always opportunity around the corner. The willingness to endure discomfort and courageously set precedents led her to be the first female graduate of The Citadel. 

Guest Wood Marchant, director of the Collegiate Recovery Program, joins Eric and Leslie for this second part on #beyondthebusiness. Wood outlines his graduate school experience and the events that led him to discover his passion to help those with addiction. He stresses that saying yes to support is the best way to further the path to recovery. Wood provides an essential social service to the young people of today who are experiencing the increasingly high pressure of substance abuse. This episode highlights some truly important life lessons applicable to not only entrepreneurs but everyone. 

Leslie rejoins us this week for this first episode with the director of the Collegiate Recovery Program at the College of Charleston, Wood Marchant. We go into the upbringing and early life of Marchant to discuss the formative events and dynamic exposure that led him to eventually working with students towards the cause of sobriety. This is a great episode that highlights the uncertainty of youth and finding your own path- reminding us when it is healthy to step back and audit our life. 

Episode II picks up with the origin story and early development of Fatty's Beer Works and the correlating decision of David McLain to work for himself. David combined his passion for craft beer, background knowledge in mechanical engineering, and the recognition of opportunity in the market to create Fatty's. It is imperative that entrepreneurs are persistent and willing to take calculated risk for potential reward. Even when up and running, entrepreneurs must practice flexibility and the ability to adapt. David stresses the need to stay humble in order to listen and learn. 

Eric meets David "Fatty" McLain, founder and CEO of Fatty's Beer Works on this episode of Beyond the Business. David shares early formative lessons from his upbringing and his initial interest in mechanical engineering. His early success in sales eventually led him back to Charleston. He credits his success to developing effective communication skills and understanding the needs of the customer. David then explains the augmented reality software used by ATLATL, showing how he found success combining sales skills with a background in engineering.
